Freedom to move is a practical, evidence-informed resource providing movement therapists (Physiotherapists, Pilates, yoga and integrated movement therapists) with an exercise blueprint to assist in their rehabilitation of clients with spinal pain disorders and many associated ‘injuries’. It presents a model of movement dysfunction commonly found in this population – and then guides the practitioner in re-establishing the Fundamental Patterns of control which are commonly deficient. These innate ‘key’ patterns have generally been lost to the client’s movement repertoire – yet they provide the foundations which underpin healthy spinal postural and movement control. Re-integrating these Fundamental Patterns into movement sequences, various postures and stretches, restores joint and neuro-myo-fascial balance and control. The focus is on mindful movement explorations and the restoration of natural patterns of functional movement – helping the client regain more movement freedom – and move out of pain. This approach is applicable within all industry models of teaching movement, including the fitness industry – for injury prevention and health promotion, and to promote enhanced spinal health within exercise programs in general.
