Kinesio Taping, Does it Work?

Kinesio Taping is getting popular nowadays, especially now at the World Cup, players are shown to have these colourfl tapes around their legs. Researchers from Brazil tried to see what the evidence says about the effectiveness of Kinesio Taping. They identified twelve randomised controlled trials (pooled sample: 495 patients) with a range of conditions (shoulder pain, knee pain, back pain, neck pain, plantar fasciitis and mixed musculoskeletal conditions). These trials used different control groups, such as sham tape, manual therapy, electro-physical agents and exercise. All the eligible trials had small samples and the risk of bias of these trials was, on average, moderate. However the results were very consistent: Kinesio Taping was no better than any control group for all conditions tested. There were very few comparisons that suggested that Kinesio Taping was better than the control groups, and their effect sizes did not reach clinical significance.
The research team also conducted large trial with 148 participants with chronic non-specific low back pain .  Experimental group participants received eight sessions (over four weeks) of Kinesio Taping applied according to the Kinesio Taping Method treatment manual (ie, 10 to 15% tension applied in flexion to create skin convolutions in neutral). The control group participants received eight sessions  of “sham” Kinesio Taping with no tension, creating no convolutions.
The results showed that applying Kinesio Tape to create convolutions in the skin did not significantly change its effect on pain or disability index at four weeks. The authors concluded that Kinesio Taping applied with stretch to generate convolutions in the skin was no more effective than simple application of the tape without tension for the outcomes measured. These results challenge the proposed mechanism of action of this therapy.
These articles of course generate lots of debate among therapists. So do you use Kinesio Taping? What’s your view and experiences? Please let us know.

Help complete a groundbreaking study: Structural Integration for chronic low back pain

Now, you can support a research into manual therapy for Lower Back Pain.

The study by Harvard Medical School research scientist Eric Jacobson, Ph.D., “Structural Integration for Chronic Low Back Pain,” has been funded by a grant from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. However that funding has run out—with analysis of data on pain disability, balance, gait, blood biomarkers and psychology uncompleted. Massage therapists and the public can contribute via the Ida P. Rolf Research Foundation to support a new clinical study’s continuation and publication. The foundation will match the first $10,000 in contributions.
